And what can you do for me?
I'm currently a product design manager in Los Angeles, building media streaming experiences at a global scale, and principal at rectiform, my independent design practice. In those roles, I work across a few distinct yet overlapping paths.
Industries and domains I've wandered through over the years include health and wellness, streaming media, fintech, toys, space, energy.
Tech I've wrestled with includes machine learning, blockchain, physical computing, and conversational interfaces.
Themes I keep coming back to: human empowerment, exploration, ethics, and serendipity.
What I bring
As a design leader, I bring an empathetic and scientific approach to product design leadership: nurture and grow teams and their supportive systems, while organizing a design machine built for tackling complex product questions. Planning doesn't scare me, and neither does the unknown: my sweet spot is building and leading design where product and org both have room to grow.
As a staff-level or consulting product designer, I work the full span from 0→1 through very large scaled products, with experience leaning across design strategy and product architecture and across a broad range of industries and technologies. As a life-long learner, deep research and ongoing curiosity is a core part of supporting any hypothesis.
As a maker, hacker, builder, and artist, I love working with novel uses of new or emerging technology, while also incorporating foundational craft techniques and humble materials. Getting called on for work that improves the human situation (even just a little bit) is always a treat.
As a leader
At Paramount Streaming (Pluto TV / Paramount+), I've hired and led designers on collaborative, cross-platform work (connected TV, mobile, web, and other devices) for core experiences millions of viewers depend on.
I shine in complicated scenarios, giving shape to abstract ideas, and re-imagination work: running from strategy through implementation until it can be built, works well, and serves a larger mission.
- Grow design strength without sacrificing craft or exploration — collaboratively building processes that grow our product without sacrificing intent.
- Turn a UX eye towards team process: less productivity theater, and more structure that supports everyday behaviors. Task intake and tracking, design tooling, and the organization of work products should be rational and improve velocity.
- Run critiques that raise craft and velocity by growing a shared understanding of system mechanics (not just pile-on opinion and vetting sessions). Build a team that collaborates by shaping how the team communicates.
- Bridge product, business, users, and engineering - learn the language, run cross-discipline workshops, and meaningfully nudge the collective towards right understanding and action.
- Treat alignment as an information-architecture problem: clear structure and processes beat hierarchy theater.
As rectiform
rectiform is my design practice, where I selectively take on all manners of work involving exploration and re-imagination, novel use cases or tech, or artistic and entrepreneurial endeavours.
I selectively take on practice work: system-level product architecture, design strategy, and high-context collaboration. I'm open to unusual structures including interim or fractional design leadership, as appropriate.
